For over 450,000 years, Man has been present on this small part of the earth ideal for winemaking. At that time, of course, Tautavel Man was not used to drink wine, but tests of pollen samples conducted in the strata of his habitat indicated that wild vine already grew on the plain of Tautavel.
Founded in 1927, the wine-cellar of Les Maîtres Vignerons de Tautavel gathers 65 winemakers who cultivate vineyards on a surface area of 330 hectares for an average annual production of 12,000 hectolitres, that is to say just more than one bottle per vine.

The village of TAUTAVEL is located on three types of soils:
To the south-east, the plateau of the Urgonian limestones of the Aptian age that only bears very few vineyards. To the west, shaly marls of the Albian and Upper Aptian ages give deep and very stony soils. To the north, all around the village, the shaly marls have been largely converted into colluvia by fallen rocks from the surrounding massifs of Urgonian limestones, and the whole territory is made of stony clay and limestone soils.
The climate is hot, dry and windy, rich in sugar, colours and aromas. Thanks to the sun and tramontane, vineyards are as one with the surrounding garrigue: thyme, rosemary, fennel, pine, juniper…
98 % of the terroir of Les Maîtres Vignerons de Tautavel are registered as Controlled Term area.
